Abstract
This study was designed to compare the anti-oxidant activity and anti-melanogenic effect of Codonopsis pilosula extracts (CPE) according to extraction solvents. Codonopsis pilosula was treated with distilled water (CPE-DW) and 70% EtOH (CPE-EtOH), respectively. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of CPE-EtOH and CPE-DW were 6.11, 8.54 ¥ìg/mg and 1.59, 2.44 ¥ìg/mg, respectively. In antioxidant activities through DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and reducing power of CPE, CPE-DW showed higher scavenging activities than those of CPE-EtOH. Furthermore, The melanin contents of CPE-EtOH and DW treatment at 100 ¥ìg/mL were significantly inhibited by 22% and 33% in melana cells, respectively (p<0.01). Its anti-melanogenic effect was originated from the inhibition of intra-cellular tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis related protein expression by CPE treatment in a dose dependent manner. Taken together, We suggest that Codonopsis pilosula extracts may be useful as a natural active ingredient for whitening cosmetics.
